In practice
Imagine part of a farm is productive grazing land. Another part is regularly waterlogged and increasingly difficult to use.
An environmental land-management option might make little sense on the productive land once lost agricultural output is considered — but be economically and environmentally attractive on the waterlogged land.
Gatepost brings together the physical characteristics of the land, existing commitments, scheme rules, estimated payments, implementation costs and farm objectives to help identify that difference.
And where the answer depends on something Gatepost cannot reliably establish — such as a specialist hydrological assessment — it tells you that too.
Grazing output on this block has been marginal for several years. An environmental land-management option may outperform continued grazing here, without affecting the rest of the farm's production.

Its job is to help you understand the options available to your farm — including the costs, obligations and trade-offs.
Sometimes the answer is to enter a scheme. Sometimes it's to invest in production. Sometimes it's to speak to a specialist.
Sometimes the best decision is to do nothing.

Where it started
Built from conversations with the people making the decisions.
Gatepost started with a conversation with a UK agricultural distributor about the complexity facing their customers.
Since then, we've been working with farmers and speaking to agronomists, advisers, environmental specialists, researchers and agricultural businesses to understand where that complexity actually affects decisions.
Gatepost is being built around those real decisions — not another collection of disconnected agricultural tools.
